Countless people have asked me "What happened to Onterrio Smith?" I have heard every "Whizzinator" joke possible. They were funny to so many people, but not to me. Onterrio was my college roommate, good friend, and one of the most talented football players I have ever seen. Now, he is a legend in Sacramento High School football, and legendary for his fall from grace. He came from a broken home in the projects of Sacramento to be a football star at Grant HS. He attended the University of Tennessee and was an immediate star, but kicked out for drugs and transferred to the University of Oregon where I met him. He is one of the most likable and charismatic people I have ever met. He was the best running back in the 2003 draft but slipped to the 4th round because of "character issues" stemming from drug use.
Addiction has no socio-economic or cultural bias. It can happen to any family. It can happen to people who may seem to be on the top of the world and have everything to live for. Darryl Strawberry, Stanley Wilson Sr., Ken Caminiti, Michael Irvin, Eddie Griffin, and Len Bias are a short list of athletes who have been victims of addiction. My friend and teammate who had the potential to be one of the best running backs in the NFL is a sad example of how drugs can ruin a life and career.
I watch a show on A&E called Intervention. The show is a video documentary about addiction. A camera crew follows alcoholics, drug addicts, and people with OCD, eating disorders and other addictions around; but those featured on the show do not know that they will soon face an intervention by their family. After the intervention, the addicts either elect to immediately enter a treatment facility or face alienation from those who they love. It is a great show but its very sad to see how bad addiction affects not only the addict but the toll it takes on their families and loved ones.
I believe no one wants to be a drug addict. I think people like using drugs and alcohol because of the feeling you get from it, but no one can want to be like the people on the show. The people featured on the show are at the bottom near rock bottom. People begin using drugs for all types of reasons and they never think they will end up meth, crack, heroine, prescription pill or alcohol addicts. After watching intervention, seeing famous people fall victim to addiction, and watching my friend's life and career tailspin out of control I have but one thing to say: Just say no!!! Making one bad decision can shatter your dreams, ruin your life, and/or kill you.

I want a trophy wife that has everything I want and need to raise a family, and will love me and stay with me until death do us part.
Athletes and entertainers are held to a high standard when it comes to fashion and style. But another talked about area is wives and girlfriends. I was in the barbershop a couple days ago and regular barbershop chatter was going on about sports; and the topic of players wives came up and I heard a comment that bothered me: "Man, I saw PLAYER X and his wife during the all star weekend and she is not an NBA wife." That's not the first time I've heard a comment like that. I don't understand why so much emphasis is put on athletes wives appearance. In this certain instance, the player has been married to his wife for a long time, so I look at it like his wife may not be Halle Berry, but shes doing something right to keep a marriage going 10+ years in 2009.
When a man is looking for a wife, hes supposed to be searching for a woman of high moral character who will take good care of him, turn his house into a happy home, and be there to support him and help him and the family grow mentally, physically, and spiritually, and is attractive to him. (Because these qualities are very important,) While you are looking for all that, you may not get a beauty queen but a great woman with a great heart. Would you rather have eye candy on your arm that may leave you in 5-7 years, or a good woman that may not have the look of the stereotypical "athletes wife" but will be your best friend for a lifetime?
Reality is, it's possible to have both, a beautiful woman that is down for you and loves you till the end but it does not always work out like that. My point is: why should how pretty an athletes wife is define who she is as a woman or a wife? After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Do you remember the "Grant Hill drinks sprite" commercials, where the guy tries to dunk and gets the ball caught on the rim? Well this guy doesn't even drink regular sprite, he drinks diet sprite because this is just embarrassing. He hits his face on the rim because he had NO business on the court attempting that dunk. Rasheed?Wallace rightfully throws the towel at him in disgust. I know all fans want to be "part of the game", but please leave the stunts to the professionals.
Does anyone but me think that 10 hrs a day of steroid talk on TV is ridiculous? These reporters are trying to get to the "bottom" of who was doing steroids and who wasn't. It's completely impossible to know who was doing it and who wasn't over a course of 15-20 years. And it's completely unfair to crucify those who you know did it when you cannot possibly find out all the people who were using.
Everyone needs to just chalk it up and let it go. The whole truth will NEVER be found so why search for parts. Only a small percentage of players who used get blamed and kept out of the hall of fame where they belong. The playing field was level. The majority were using so it was fair. Records should stand, memories of greatness will remain, nothing should be erased.
I hope we learn from this that what the Bible says is true...what is done in the dark will come to light. And that a blind eye should never be turned to wrong doing while its going on.
