Roy Jones Jr. Tells Garcia To Improve

Roy Jones Jr. has questioned Ryan Garcia’s skills at the elite level in light of his struggles to get a big fight at 140.

Garcia’s biggest fight to date was against Gervonta Davis. He was stopped in the seventh round with a body shot. The 136-pound catchweight and ten-pound rehydration clause were blamed for his poor performance. The same can be said for his lack of fundamentals. Garcia left his chin up in the air, paying the price. In the second round, Davis dropped him with a quick counter left.

In the seventh round, Garcia attempted to use his signature left hook. He missed as Davis neutralized it by ducking low, only to hit him with a body shot, ending the fight. After the loss, Garcia decided to move up to 140 and hire Derrick James as his trainer. James is known for focusing on boxing fundamentals, which Garcia needs to work on. Now Roy Jones has echoed those by telling Garcia to develop more tools in his arsenal for the big-name fighters.

Roy Jones On Garcia

“I like him a lot. I think Ryan is an awesome fighter. The problem with Ryan is he’s got a left hook that is a killer, but everybody knows that. So until he gets something else to disguise the left hook, something else to make people worry about, he’s going to have a hard time. With the upper echelon fighters. The regular fighters, he’ll kill. If he hits you with his left hook, it’s over with. But the guys that know not to get hit with the left hook like Tank did, they’re going to be a problem until he gets more put in his arsenal,” Jones said

Outside of that, Garcia needs help to make the big fights. He was linked with the Devin Haney fight only to pull out of talks. Garcia decided to go after Rolando Romero. Garcia described it as the best business move given that it was seen as a chance to get a bigger purse and a world title and then set up the Haney unification.

Those plans were scuppered when the Romero fight broke down. Oscar De La Hoya stated Romero priced himself out, while Rolly hit back to claim Garcia’s team never wanted the fight as they were going behind his back to get someone else.

Romero on Garcia

“F Princess Ryan Garcia, f Oscar De La Fishnets, and f DAZN, the stiest streaming network out there, for wasting my time and more important wasting the entire boxing world’s time. It’s disgusting to see how you guys do business, then trying to go behind my back offering [Isaac Cruz] an offer, then claiming I [priced myself out]. Y’all fed up. Now it’s Rolly vs Pitbull on Amazon Prime, the largest network in boxing history. This fight is an explosion,” Romero said

De La Hoya also suggested that a fight with Jose Ramirez was close, only for Garcia to tell his promoter that he was uninterested in the bout. So, moving forward, Garcia must resolve his issues inside and outside the ring.
