Former Texas QB Casey Thompson Enters Transfer Portal For Second Time
USA TODAY Sports

AUSTIN -- The Texas Longhorns are set in the quarterback room for the foreseeable future. But after leaving the program at the end of the 2021 season, former starter Casey Thompson is already on the hunt for a new home.

Thompson officially entered the transfer portal in December of 2021, opening the door for Quinn Ewers to eventually win the starting job over, Hudson Card.

Thompson started 10 of 12 games for the Cornhuskers last season, battling through injuries to complete 63 percent of his passes for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also had five touchdowns on the ground.

The Huskers finished that season 4-8 overall, and sixth in the Big 10 West. All four wins for the Huskers came with Thompson under center.

At Texas in 2021, after taking over for Hudson Card in the second half of the Longhorns' Week 2 loss to Arkansas, Thompson led the Longhorns on a three-game winning streak and had Texas seemingly poised for a deep run at a Big 12 title.

However, following the Longhorns' hot start in the Red River Showdown, things went south in the second half, and Texas lost to Oklahoma. Thompson and the Horns would then go on a six-game losing streak, including suffering an embarrassing overtime loss to Kansas.

The Horns finished that year 5-7 following a season finale victory over Kansas State.

Thompson ended his time in Austin completing 185 of 290 passes for 2,422 yards and 30 touchdowns with nine interceptions in 19 appearances.
