Player Review: Just WIN-ans

When the Braves needed some starting pitching help, Allan Winans stepped up to the plate and delivered. Sure, he had two games that went bad, but if we exclude those two games, Winans went 1-1 with a 2.43 ERA. In the other two games, he went 0-1 with a 12.72 ERA. What we need to find is a happy medium for Winans. 

(Editor's note: I'm of the opinion that asking him to face the same team in back to back starts was a mistake. Guys like Winans who don't have overwhelming stuff - his fastball averaged 90 mph - rely on sequencing and location, and facing a team back to back is like giving them 4th, 5th, and 6th at-bats against you. His two losses? His 2nd consecutive start against the Mets and his 2nd consecutive start against the Nationals.) 

He pitched very well at AAA Gwinnett where he finished 9-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 17 starts. With some question marks surrounding the Atlanta pitching staff next year, Winans has a shot to be a starter next season.

Allan Winans's contract status

Winans is in his first year of contractual control, so he's making the league minimum, $720,000. Of note, he only gets that amount for days he is on the active roster - during his time in Gwinnett, he receives a significantly lower amount.

Of particular note, Winans did not spend enough time with the big-league club in 2023 to lose rookie eligibility, so were he to spend the 2024 season with the club, he would be eligible for Rookie of the Year awards.
