Cowboys Break 'Jimmy Johnson Curse,' Irvin Insists, Predicts Win
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

To be honest, the Dallas Cowboys really shouldn't need any voodoo or jixes or "lifted curses'' to beat the woeful Washington Commanders today.

But just in case ...

Legendary Cowboys and NFL wide receiver Michael Irvin is now on-record in joining a legion of "America's Team'' fans who have long had "miserablwe fun'' in believing that the Cowboys have for almost 30 years been existing under a "curse'' ... and that now that curse has been lifted.

The Hall of Famer Irvin is saying that the Cowboys had been dealing with "The Curse of Jimmy Johnson'' all these years because of owner Jerry Jones' slow trigger in putting the legendary head coach in the team's Ring of Honor.

But that changed last Saturday night. ... and so now, everything has changed! Right, Michael?

"The 'Jimmy Johnson Curse' being lifted will make sure that doesn’t happen, buddy," Irvin said on Twitter in response to a fan questioning the team's fate against Washington in NFL Week 18 Sunday.

Ah, but wait a moment, "Playmaker.'' Here is where you're wrong ...

The supposed "Curse'' isn't about the Cowboys beating a team that is a 13-point underdog. It's about the return to Super Bowl glory in Dallas, of the sort experienced in the 1990's when Johnson and Jones built a three-time champion - with Irvin, of course, a centerpiece of it all.

Dallas and Washington are scheduled to kick off at 3:25 p.m. CT on Sunday. If the Cowboys win? That will be evidence of nothing except that it means they get the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs, which means a great deal.

And after that, if the Cowboys forge ahead into true Super Bowl contention? Then and then only can we truly celebrate the lifting of "The Jimmy Johnson Curse.''
