New York Rangers sign goaltender Hugo Ollas to two-year, entry-level contract
David Kirouac-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Rangers have announced that goaltender Hugo Ollas has signed a two-year, entry-level contract.

Ollas will forego his senior season at Merrimack College to turn pro. Ollas had a 7-12-0 record with a .908 save percentage this year in what proved to be a difficult season for Merrimack. Ollas was named to the Hockey East third all-star team in 2022-23 and finishes his tenure with a 27-27-0 record with a respectable .914 save percentage.

Ollas was drafted by the Rangers 197th overall in 2020 to help give the club some extra long-term goaltending depth. Standing tall at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, the Swedish native was drafted out of the Linkoping U-20 program before getting a two-game audition with the franchise’s SHL club in 2020-21. Ollas also has experience with Sweden’s junior nation team programs, going 3-1-0 between the U-17 and U-20 teams during his career.

According to College Hockey News’ Mike McMahon, Ollas is set to report to the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack. It’ll be interesting to see where Ollas fits into the team’s depth chart over the next few years given their logjam in the crease.

However, signing Ollas now shows the team thinks highly of him. They already have Louis Dominque, Dylan Garand and Talyn Boyko signed until 2025, with 23-year-old Olof Lindbom set to be an RFA this year, according to CapFriendly.

Igor Shesterkin, the team’s long-term No. 1, has one more year left on his deal this year at $5.66 million, while Jonathan Quick will be a UFA after the 2024-25 campaign, as well.
